A member of the Moose Cree First Nation, Shibastik (Chris G. Sutherland) is an accomplished painter, lyricist, and hip hop musician. His music and art, deeply inspired by life as a Cree hunter on the James Bay Lowlands, promote awareness and appreciation for both the land and First Nation culture.
Shibastik began releasing music independently in 1998. At the forefront of Canada's Native hip hop movement, Shibastik was one of the very first Native hip hop artists to be featured on national television (2002). His distinctive brand of music and thought- provoking lyrics have continued to move and empower audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Shibastik has spent over three years working in a secure custody youth detention center and has over ten years of extensive training and experience working with youth. It was while working at the youth detention center that Shibastik developed his 'Healing Through Hip Hop' workshop. He has since presented his workshop at conferences, in schools (elementary, secondary and post-secondary), and at various events nationwide.
